Spotted in the parking lot of a local restaurant.

I envision the Mustang's owner getting razzed by his friends for owning a "late-model" car, but I have never seen a Mustang in person with that nice of a resto job before. I assume it's a "real" Shelby GT350, since if you're gonna do a clone, why not do a GT500?

I was going to say, I wonder if that's a real GT350H. And if you're starting with a 64-66 Mustang, a GT500 is out of the question anyway.

Because it's a GT-350 H. Those are faked because Hertz.

Well, that's not a regular GT350, but a GT350H, a special series ordered by Hertz for their Rent-a-Racer program back in 65 and 66, and those are a lot harder to come by, if I'm not mistaken.

If it's real, it's a nice find, if not, I don't quite get the logic of a GT350H clone, since the rarity is the main appeal of the H.

I'm going to say it is a clone based on a few details. The 289 badge on the fender was not used on Shelby's. On the interior the tach is is one that sits in a molded plastic shroud between the two bumps on the dash pad. The '66 Hertz cars used a tach that was mounted to the top of the dash pad rather than between and not in the plastic housing. The seats in the photo are part of the "pony" interior and were not used on Shelby's. Also, the front valance is not correct.

Nice car, but more than likely it is a clone, unless the owner changes all of the above.

Actually the Hertz cars typically don't demand the prices that their non-Hetrz counterparts do. There were 1000 '66 Hertz cars made, which broken down into colors, makes them the least rare of the '66 Shelbys.

Wow, good eye for detail from my lousy cell phone pics!

Given your username, I will happily take your word for it that it's a clone.

On the side, my dad, some friends and I do concours restorations on early Shelby's. After doing a few, you start to learn the minute details and can spot a clone fairly easily. Heres a pic of mine:

Thanks for the correction, I always assumed they were somewhat more rare because, well, they were a series within a series.
